Lima's Samaritan House

An emergency shelter for women and their minor children. Serving North West Ohio.

Limas Samaritan House is a supportive program designed to help women become self-sufficient. Our on-site services, along with several area social service agencies, assist each individual with housing, personal, educational and vocational goals.

Shelter services include one-on-one case management, meals, bathing and laundry facilities along with supportive programming that may include parenting, resume and job readiness, drug and alcohol education, budgeting, health and hygiene education, nutrition and more.

The crucial role of case management identifies and addresses the multiple challenges our women and children face on a daily basis. Guiding clients through choices and changes increases their chances to succeed and significantly reduces recidivism. Case Management also works to connect individuals with programs and resources necessary to ensure not only a successful transition, but a support system once they have moved on from the shelter.

While there is no cost to stay at Samaritan House, the women are required to save 80% of their income to apply toward their future housing. This not only empowers the women by investing in their own future, but also helps to extend the limited community resources. Admissions are up to a 90 day period.

Referrals

Women and children are referred to Limas Samaritan House by self-referral, churches, and other public and private social service agencies. Clients eligible for services must have no permanent residence.

Limas Samaritan House can accommodate up to seventeen households at a time and up to thirty-five individuals depending on the size of the households being served.

I believe this house helps many women and children. I do think they should be a little more lenient on curfew when someone work a full time job. But, other than that great place.

I have a 14 month old son, my husband died while I was 3 months pregnant. I have been living with my parents byput they are abusive and it has gotten really bad lately. I need help but have no income except for survivor's benefits from social security.

I have been in the Samaritan house for 10 days weeks and have gotten 9 write ups on the same thing. They do not warn you before getting a write up and your only allowed to get 10 write up and then they will give you a day to find somewhere to go with your child or children. I have seen 4 mothers with BABIES get put out in the middle of WINTER with no offering of other resources or help from the shelter. I DONT RECOMMEND THIS SHELTER TO ANY HOMELESS PERSON. They do not allow you to eat your own food that you buy, you have to share or get enough for everyone in the shelter including enjoy for staff members. The case manager does not help you with anything. You have to do everything on your own. If you work you have to give them 80% of your earnings and keep 20%. They make it sound so good on the phone. Literally it’s like soon as they get the funding for you they will find any reason to kick you out. The case worker is lazy. I’m not from Lima and had to figure everything out on my own, every time I met with the case manager she did nothing but ask me the same questions she ask the last time I met with her. If you get food stamps they want you to buy and provide all the food for everyone in the shelter. You are not allowed to even buy your kids something just for them to enjoy without getting everyone else something as well. But good luck if you want ti be in prison again to some or for the first time for others. DONT SPEAK YOUR OPINION IN THERE OR THEY WILL TELL YOU “you can leave”. So make sure you be quiet .

This place was a blessing. We spent two months here before getting into our first own apartment. You also have to put in the work tho. We didn’t have anything done for us or handed over to us. We had chores and had to save 80% of our income so that way we have it when we leave. I was able to save more money than I ever have before which helped with our apartment and just knowing I’m capable of doing so I been able to keep a little savings. It can be a little scary being in a shelter but they try to keep it like a home. Lots of women there not willing to help themselves and want to argue rules make it harder for everyone else. I saw in a review about if you get food having to share for everyone. This is kinda frustrating but it’s also not fair for some kids to get to eat McDonald in front of everyone else kids. We didn’t have stamps but everything is provided to cook. We usually had big meals three times a week like spaghetti, chili or chicken and mashed potatoes and then their would be donations from the church such as pizza and other meals. For the most part it’s just basic rules. You have to make a plan for housing. Like getting a job and saving. There’s a curfew unless your working. Kids have a 8:30 bedtime and there’s absolutely no drugs. In the moment I would get frustrated but looking back I learned a lot of lessons, was able to save because the shelter provided everything and now with my own apartment have kept my little daily chores and putting money back for emergencies for every check. I would definitely recommend. Be homeless was hard but I would never take back all the lessons it taught me.
