The Surayya Anne Foundation is a shelter for women and children in need.
They provide both long-term and short-term housing for families who are disadvantaged, sick, homeless, or abused with a focus on reintegrating them back into society.
In March, 2009, the Surayya Anne Foundation (SAF) opened a shelter for women and children in need.
SAF's primary goal has been to re-establish shelter residents back into society by focusing on work and education as part of their shelter stay.
Shelter residents include the disadvantaged, those suffering from catastrophic illness, the evicted and homeless, families in crisis or transition, women and/or children suffering abuse, or women re-entering society from prison, and individuals having financial difficulties.
The shelter has an onsite house manager who oversees shelter entry, food deliveries and day to day operations.
In addition, SAF has a case manager who guides residents in applying for social service programs like food stamps, DHS housing and health care benefits.
The case manager also focuses on job and educational placement, as well as, transitioning into independent living.
In 2010 the shelter qualified for grant-based counseling, which provides shelter residents with additional guidance and help.
Shelter admission requires an application process and the agreement to work or go to school full time.
Once settled in, residents begin saving part of their monthly income in a savings account so they can work towards having their own place to live.
